MK802IV LE Quickstart Guide

Thanks for purchasing one of the most cutting edge mini computing devices available today, the MK802IV LE.

The MK802IV LE is a full blown linux mini computer so if you are familiar with Ubuntu Linux you should have no problem setting the device up. If you are new to Linux then this device is a great tool for learning about Linux on ARM architechture.

Hopefully by now you will have unboxed the device and plugged it in to a HDMI (1920x1080p) compatible display, connected the USB power adapter and a mouse and keyboard and will now have the Ubuntu login screen in front of you.

Changing the password

Please change this password at the earliest opportunity (for security reasons) you can do this from the desktop by going to the top menu: Applications > Accessories > Terminal

In the terminal type: passwd

Hit enter and then type the default password when prompted

Then enter your new password, you will be prompted to enter this twice.

Connecting to a network

The MK802IV LE has a built in Wifi card, to use this to connect to a wireless network please click on the wireless icon on the top right of the status bar, you will see two wireless network interfaces listed, use the lower of the two interfaces in the list to select your wireless network, then enter the security key for the network (WEP, WPA) in the dialog box.

Resizing the OS partition

The MK802IV LE comes with either 8GB or 16GB of Flash NAND storage. Each device is flashed at the factory with the latest disk image of the Ubuntu (Picuntu) OS, the image file we use is smaller than the total flash size available on your device so to resize the partition to fill the entire flash storage of your device you can do the following.

Go to the top menu: Applications > Accessories > Terminal

In the terminal type: sudo resize2fs

Hit enter and type your password

There will be some messages in the terminal window as the OS partition is resized.

To check the new size you can type: df -h

You should see that the total size of /dev/mtdblock2 is now close to the size of your devices total NAND Flash size (8GB or 16GB depending on your model). There is a small amount of disk space reserved for the kernel and boot partitions.

Enabling Auto Disk Check on Boot

The filesystem is configured to do a check of the filesystem at boot time. This feature is normal since the device can be turned off suddenly it can help avoid data corruption. Normally the system will prompt you and ask if you would like to fix any errors by pressing the F key. This is not ideal for server applications where there is no user present at the keyboard.

You can configure the device to automatically Fix the filesystem and avoid the need for human intervention by editing.

/etc/default/rcS

and then changing the line

# automatically repair filesystems with inconsistencies during boot

FSCKFIX=no

# automatically repair filesystems with inconsistencies during boot

FSCKFIX=yes

Using the device

There are quite a lot of preinstalled apps on the MK802IV LE, from web browsing to filemanagement and media playback. You can access the preinstalled software from the Applications menu on the status bar.

If you want to install more applications you can do so by using the software center which is located at the bottom of the applications menu. Please be aware that not all software is guaranteed to work (however most does!) as this is a very new platform so you may run into compatibility issues.

For advanced users you can of course use the apt-get command to install new packages.

Updating the device

As with any Linux system, be careful when carrying out updates, the MK802IV LE has been fully tested on the system it comes supplied with and should function well. Carrying out unproven updates may cause issues. If in doubt, do not proceed with updates and wait for official updates to become available.
